Are you an Indian student dreaming of doing your Master's or PhD in Japan? The MEXT Scholarship for Research Students 2027 is now open — and this could be the opportunity that changes your life.

MEXT stands for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan. Every year, the Japanese Government offers this prestigious scholarship to students from across the world, including India. It is one of the most respected and fully funded government scholarships available today.

If you are a graduate or postgraduate student looking to pursue advanced research in Japan — keep reading.

What is the MEXT Research Student Scholarship?

Under this scholarship, you first join a Japanese university as a non-regular research student. During this period, you work directly under a professor in your chosen field, get familiar with the Japanese academic system, and prepare to enter a formal Master's or PhD programme.

Once you clear the university's internal exam, you transition into a regular Master's or Doctoral course — and your scholarship continues throughout.

This is what makes MEXT special. You don't need direct admission into a Master's or PhD before applying. You earn your way in, with full financial support from Day 1.

Who Can Apply?

You are eligible if:

  1. You are under 35 years old (born on or after April 2, 1991)
  2. You hold a Bachelor's degree with minimum 70% marks (for Master's / Doctoral first phase)
  3. You hold a Master's degree with minimum 70% marks (for PhD / Doctoral second phase)
  4. For Humanities and Social Sciences, the minimum is 65%
  5. You are an Indian national

Your degree must be completed on or before September 30, 2026 for the October 2026 batch.

One Thing That Can Improve Your Chances

Here is something many applicants overlook — basic Japanese language skills.

You do not need to be fluent. Even knowing simple Japanese shows your professors and interviewers that you are serious about living and studying in Japan. It helps during your research student period, in daily life, and honestly, it makes a strong impression.

If you want to start somewhere practical, we help students begin their Japanese language journey in a simple, structured way.
