How to Apply for MEXT Scholarship (Made Easy for Indian Students!)

Applying for the MEXT Scholarship may sound complicated, but don’t worry – here’s a super simple guide that even school students can understand.

There are two main ways to apply, but the Embassy Recommendation Route is the most common and preferred for Indian students. Let’s go step by step:

Step 1: Wait for the Scholarship Notification

    • Every year around April or May, the Embassy of Japan in India announces that applications are open.
    • You’ll find the official notification on their website -🔗 https://www.in.emb-japan.go.jp

Step 2: Choose the Right Scholarship Category

Based on your age and education level, choose from:

  • Undergraduate (for students who finished Class 12)
  • Postgraduate/Research (for college graduates)
  • Specialized/Vocational, Teacher Training, or KOSEN (Polytechnic) programs

Each one has its own form and rules, so pick carefully!

Step 3: Fill Out the Application Form

  • Download the form from the Embassy’s website
  • Fill in your personal info, school/college details, and your field of study
  • You may also have to write a “Why do you want to study in Japan?” essay

🖨 Don’t forget to print your form and keep extra copies of your documents!

Step 4: Prepare the Required Documents

These usually include:

  • Your mark sheets or certificates (Class 10, 12, or college)
  • A passport-sized photo.
  • Health certificate (format provided).
  • A valid ID proof (like passport or Aadhaar).
  • Research proposal (only for PG/PhD students).

📁 Make sure all documents are neat and complete!

Step 5: Submit the Application

  • Send your completed form and documents to the Embassy of Japan in India, either by post or in-person (as per the year’s rules)
  • Application Period :- 14th April to 13th May 2025 — so don’t wait till the last minute!

Step 6: Written Test + Interview

If your application is selected:

  • You’ll be called for a written test (subjects depend on your course – like English, Japanese, Math, or Science)
  • Then there’s a personal interview where they ask about your goals, why Japan, and how you’ll use your education

💡 Be confident and show genuine interest!

Step 7: University Placement (for PG & Research)

If you’re applying for PG or research:

  • Once you pass the interview, the Embassy will help you contact Japanese universities
  • You’ll need a Letter of Acceptance from the university

If Everything Goes Well… You’re Going to Japan!

The Embassy will guide you with visa processing, flight bookings, and university joining formalities.

💡 Tip :-

Don’t be scared – many Indian students have done this before, even from small towns and government schools. All you need is good marks, dedication, and a dream to study in Japan!
