Is Japanese Hard to Learn? Myths vs Reality for Beginners

by | Mar 5, 2025 | Japanese, JLPT N5 | 0 comments

Introduction

Many Indians dream of learning Japanese—whether for better career opportunities, watching anime without subtitles, or exploring Japan’s rich culture. But there’s one common fear:

“Is Japanese too hard to learn?”

You might have heard that Japanese has thousands of characters or that grammar is too complex. But is this really true? Let’s break the myths and discover the reality!

Myths About Learning Japanese

Myth 1: You Need to Memorize Thousands of Characters to Speak Japanese

A lot of people believe that without knowing thousands of characters, you can’t speak Japanese. But here’s the truth—you don’t need them to start speaking!

Reality:

  • Japanese has three writing systems: ひらがな (hiragana), カタカナ (katakana), and kanji.
  • ひらがな and カタカナ (just 46 characters each) are enough for beginners to start reading and writing.
  • Many Japanese words are written without kanji, and even native speakers use kana for casual writing.

Tip: Start with ひらがな and カタカナ, then gradually learn kanji. It’s like learning the Hindi script before tackling Sanskrit!

Myth 2: Japanese Grammar is Too Complicated

Indian learners often assume that Japanese grammar is confusing because sentences are structured differently from English and Hindi.

Reality:

  • Japanese grammar is logical and follows set patterns.
  • Unlike English, there are no complex verb conjugations (like am, is, are, was, were).
  • The word order may be different, but it’s easy to understand once you practice.

For example:

  • English: I eat rice.
  • Hindi: मैं चावल खाता हूँ।
  • Japanese: わたしはごはんをたべます。(watashi wa gohan o tabemasu.)

Just like Hindi follows Subject-Object-Verb order, so does Japanese!

Myth 3: Japanese Pronunciation is Difficult

Many people think Japanese pronunciation is hard, but it’s actually simpler than English!

Reality:

  • Most Japanese sounds exist in Indian languages.
  • Unlike English, Japanese words are pronounced exactly as they are written.
  • There are no difficult sounds like th in “the” or r in “world”.

For example:

  • ありがとう (arigatou) – Sounds like “Aree-gaa-toh”, easy to say!
  • カレー (karē) – Japanese for curry, sounds like “ka-ray”!

If you can pronounce Hindi or Marathi words, Japanese pronunciation is a breeze!

Why Japanese is Easier Than You Think

1. You Already Know Some Japanese Words!

Did you know many Japanese words come from English? That makes learning easier!

For example:

  • テレビ (terebi) = Television
  • コンピュータ (konpyūtā) = Computer
  • タクシ(takushī) = Taxi

If you know English, you already understand many Japanese words!

2. No Gendered Words Like Hindi

In Hindi, words change based on gender (ladka khata hai vs. ladki khati hai).
But in Japanese, verbs stay the same for everyone!

For example:

  • おとこのこはたべます。(otokonoko wa tabemasu.) = The boy eats.
  • おんなのこはたべます。(onnanoko wa tabemasu.) = The girl eats.

Same verb たべます (tabemasu) for both! That makes it easier than Hindi!

3. Learning Japanese Gives You an Advantage

  • Job opportunities in Japan are increasing for Indians in IT, engineering, and business.
  • Anime, manga, and J-pop fans can enjoy content without subtitles!
  • Higher studies in Japan offer scholarships for Indian students.

Bonus Tip: If you know Sanskrit, learning kanji will be easier because both languages use pictorial symbols!

Tips for Indian Learners

  1. Start with ひらがな & カタカナ – Don’t rush to kanji!
  2. Practice with Anime & Manga – Listen to native pronunciation.
  3. Use Apps Like Anki, LingoDeer, or Takoboto – Fun, interactive learning.
  4. Join Japanese Language Classes – Structured learning helps you progress faster.
